Safety relay. When the load cannot be controlled directly by the safety controller, an intermediate relay becomes necessary. For example, if the controller cannot handle the amount of energy needed to switch the load; or the voltage is different from 24 VDC; or it requires multiple contacts to be controlled by the same control signal. SIL certified safety relays are a requirement to meet the required risk reduction factor (RRF) when switching on or off the load in the IEC61508/61511 Instrumental Safety Function (SIF). SIL certified relays ensure that the safety function is performed with a suitable and known probability of failure (PFD).
